3 Things we should re-think about the world

To this post, I was kind of inspired by Miss Peppermint. In my interview with her, I asked her what kind of topics she would like to read more about in other blogs. She answered that she is interested in what other people are „fighting for“, what kind of topics move them. I have a lot of topics that matter to me, but returning from Peru and having attended a lot of seminars about racism that really made me re-think my education and thought patterns, one of the topics I want to fight for is how we, Europeans and North Americans, better known as „the West“ are seeing „the rest“, or correctly said, countries of the Global South.

This blog entry isn’t meant like a accusation. It’s only supposed to give everyone who never had contact to the topic of racism something to think about.

1. The „discovery“ of America

„We don’t call that discovery. We call that the arrival of the Spanish, the stupid sons of a b*tch.“ When I first heard that sentence, I found it kind of funny. I thought it was a joke. But it’s not. Not one person, from Mexico to Chile, would call the year of 1492 the „discovery of America“. And it’s logic, why should they? Their ancestors had been living in the place later on called America for years and years before the Spanish arrived, and they were well aware of their own continent. Plus, the Spanish brought death, slavery and ongoing suppression of indigenous people. The term „discovery of America“ is racist and euro-centric – it’s associated with the indigenous people being „un-civilized“ and needing help of Spanish „discoverers“, and makes the cruelties of the Spanish seem positive. Still, that term can be found in every school book.

2. Our world map

That map looks pretty different, huh? But it’s not wrong. It’s a mathematic rule that if you try to display a ball (earth) on something flat (map), there are different ways to do it, different projections, depending on what you focus on. So there also exist a lot of different world maps. Our common world map is only one possibility, and its focus is on displaying the right forms of the countries. Still, it does not display the right sizes of countries and continents. The map above does. The forms are wrong, but the size proportions are correct. And suddenly Africa and South America seem pretty big, right? There also exist maps that have the South Pole on top. To come to a point… never forget that everything is a question of perspective.

3. Single Stories

„Show a people as one thing, as only one thing, over and over again and that is what they become.“ Ever been in another country? Ever heard crazy-sounding prejudices about where you’re from? When I was in Peru, I was kind of surprised about the things people thought about Germany. One time, somebody told me that „In Germany people always drink beer directly from the bottles“. What?! Where did he hear that? Or better, „Germans never drink alcohol. They only drink mineral water“. Probably, he met one or two Germans in his life – and these persons didn’t drink any alcohol.

And when I heared these prejudices, I thought about my own. Don’t we all have bias about certain nations? All these prejudices we have come from single stories – we didn’t get enough information about a faraway country, so we assume that all the place is like what we heard. And the same way, big, world-influencing and racist ways of thinking are born. In Peru, many people I met believed that in Germany didn’t exist poverty. They had only heard of good economy, met people who could afford a flight halfway around the world, seen tourist in expensive restaurants and bars. And the other way round, many Germans I talked to couldn’t imagine that in Peru also exist skyscrapers, international fast food chains, expensive fashion stores, business people or high-standard universities.

Of course, it’s impossible to be free of prejudices. But it’s a step in the right direction to think about the information we get from media, how diverse it is, or simply to open our minds, travel and tell other people about our experiences.

10 Gedanken zu “3 Things we should re-think about the world”

Punkt.
